In the spring of 2020, the life of 25-year-old Deontae Vilada Belcher was cut tragically short. The young man from Rosedale, Maryland, had been reported missing by his mother on April 18, having last been seen on April 11 getting into a four-door sedan with two other people. For weeks, his whereabouts remained a mystery, a period of agonizing uncertainty for his loved ones.
The search came to a grim conclusion on May 1, 2020.
Shortly before noon, authorities in Dorchester County received 911 calls reporting a body discovered along a power line trail off Horns Point Road in Cambridge. The deceased was soon identified as Deontae Belcher. An autopsy would later confirm that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds, turning a missing person case into a homicide investigation.
The investigation, led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, quickly focused on a suspect: 29-year-old James Andre Reddick, Jr., of Baltimore. Authorities identified Reddick, who also went by the aliases 'Shane' or 'Dre,' as a person of interest and warned that he was to be considered armed and dangerous. A fugitive task force began a search for Reddick, who was known to frequent York, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore.
On May 23, 2020, the search for Reddick ended. He was located and arrested without incident in the backyard of a home on Garrison Boulevard in Baltimore. Reddick was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, robbery, and various firearm charges. In May 2023, James Reddick was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional life sentence and 20 years, for the murder of Deontae Belcher.
