In the early morning hours of November 18, 2020, the quiet of a Fort Washington, Maryland street was broken by the sound of a single-vehicle accident. When patrol officers arrived at the 200 block of Taurus Drive at approximately 1:50 a.m., they discovered a far more grim scene than a mere car crash. Inside the vehicle was 39-year-old Michael Sofidiya, a male resident of Fort Washington, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into Michael's death quickly focused on a prime suspect, his younger brother, 37-year-old Malcolm Sofidiya, also of Fort Washington. Homicide detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department arrested Malcolm in connection with the fatal shooting. The preliminary investigation revealed that the two brothers were together before the tragic incident unfolded, though a motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Following his arrest, Malcolm Sofidiya was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other firearms-related offenses. He was taken into the custody of the Department of Corrections, where a court commissioner ordered him to be held without bond.
