The life of Douglas Green, along with his 62-year-old wife Olivia, was cut short by their own son, 27-year-old Joshua Green, in their Baldwin home.
After killing his parents, Joshua Green drove
approximately 18 miles to a Royal Farms convenience store in Essex. There, he continued his senseless attack, fatally shooting 62-year-old Alpha Smith as she sat in her car in the parking lot. He then entered the store and shot and killed 43-year-old Silvesta Daye, Jr., a customer, and wounded a 22-year-old employee. The violence did not end there. Following the shootings at the convenience store, Joshua Green proceeded to his own apartment and set it on fire.
When law enforcement responded to the apartment fire, they discovered Joshua Green's body in the parking lot. It was later determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The discovery of Douglas and Olivia Green's bodies came later when police went to their home to notify them of their son's death. They were found deceased in the garage, having both been shot.
The investigation that followed confirmed that Joshua Green acted alone in the killings. Authorities reported that the firearm used in the shootings was legally purchased by him the previous year. Despite the horrific nature of his actions, a clear motive for the rampage was never determined by police.
