Darron McCoy Jr., a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of January 17, 2022, in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred at approximately 11:34 p.m. in the 4900 block of North Franklintown Road, at the intersection with Winans Way. Baltimore Police Department's Southwest District officers were dispatched to the location following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, they discovered McCoy suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported McCoy to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The cause of his death was determined to be from the shooting.
An investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of a 17-year-old male on January 28, 2022. The teenager, Daquan George, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder and was initially held without bail. In July 2024, then 19-year-old George was convicted of second-degree murder and firearm use in a felony violent crime for the death of McCoy, who was shot more than 20 times. During the incident, McCoy had sent a text message to his family indicating he was with George and two other individuals. One of those individuals was later murdered, and the other has not been charged in connection with McCoy's death.
The court learned of the profound impact of McCoy's murder on his mother, who described suffering from night terrors and survivor's guilt. The defense attributed George's actions to his youth and slow brain development. However, the judge, citing the viciousness of the crime and George's continued misconduct while incarcerated, including multiple threats against correctional officers, imposed a sentence that exceeded the suggested guidelines. Daquan George was sentenced to a total of 55 years in prison, consisting of 40 years for second-degree murder and a consecutive 15 years for the firearm charge, with the first five years to be served without the possibility of parole.
