In the spring of 2019, a violent encounter on a Baltimore street set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the death of Jaquan Purvis two years later. On the night of April 2, 2019, police responded to a Shot Spotter alert in the 1400 block of West Fayette Street, where they found Purvis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The 37-year-old male was transported to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center for treatment of his serious injuries.
Following the
shooting, an investigation led to the identification and arrest of Jamie Vaughn. On October 28, 2019, Vaughn pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, firearm use in a violent crime, and carrying a handgun. He was subsequently sentenced to prison for his role in the shooting that left Purvis with lasting health complications.
For more than two years, Purvis lived with the consequences of the violent attack. However, on May 23, 2021, he succumbed to the injuries he had sustained. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that his death was a direct result of complications from the 2019 shooting and officially ruled it a homicide. This ruling upgraded the initial non-fatal shooting case to a homicide investigation, with the previously convicted assailant already incarcerated for the initial crime.
