In the fall of 2019, the life of 33-year-old Domingo Dijon Champion, a Black male from Chester, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On the evening of October 16th, deputies with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office were in the area of Lymon Reece Road when they heard the distinct sound of gunshots piercing the air nearby. At approximately the same time, a call came into Lancaster County EMS about a man down at the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and 16th Street.
Upon their
arrival, first responders discovered Champion lying in the road, suffering from severe gunshot wounds. He was initially rushed to MUSC-Lancaster for medical attention before being airlifted to Atrium Health-Main in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Domingo Champion succumbed to his injuries and passed away. Known affectionately as 'Redd,' he was remembered by loved ones for his ever-present smile and the happiness he brought to those around him.
The investigation into Champion's death quickly pointed to one individual: 31-year-old Raykeivis Demont Nesbit of Lancaster. Believed to be the sole person responsible for the shooting, Nesbit had fled the scene. A K-9 unit was deployed to track him, but he initially evaded capture. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office promptly issued warrants for Nesbit's arrest on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The manhunt for Nesbit, who was considered armed and dangerous, concluded the following day, on October 17, 2019, when he was located and apprehended in the neighboring Kershaw County. At the time of the shooting, Nesbit was reportedly out on bond for a recent arrest for possession of narcotic drugs. His criminal history also included prior convictions for resisting arrest and domestic violence. Following his capture, Nesbit was held without bond to await legal proceedings for the murder of Domingo Champion.
