On October 27, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred at a Halloween party held at an Airbnb rental on Ferndale Avenue in Mansfield, Ohio. The incident resulted in the deaths of two teenagers: 17-year-old Jarmel Deaunte Boyd and 18-year-old Brandon Collins. Four other individuals, aged between 14 and 19, sustained injuries during the shooting.
Following an investigation, Mansfield police arrested 22-year-old Cyrus Jalyn Ellerbe on November 8, 2023, charging him with multiple counts of murder
and felonious assault in connection with the incident. Authorities indicated that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two local gangs. Ellerbe's bond was set at $5 million.
In February 2024, a grand jury indicted Ellerbe on six counts of murder and eight counts of felonious assault. During his trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking Ellerbe to the crime, leading to a guilty verdict on all charges in September 2024. Subsequently, in October 2024, Ellerbe was sentenced to 67 years to life in prison for his role in the double homicide and the injuries inflicted on the other victims.
The deaths of Boyd and Collins marked the 10th and 11th homicides in Mansfield in 2023, reflecting a concerning increase in violent crime within the city. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event, mourning the loss of two young lives and seeking ways to address the underlying issues that contributed to such violence.
