In the quiet town of Lexington, South Carolina, the life of 15-year-old Zeloni Canyus Ellison was tragically cut short on the evening of January 29, 2022. The young man, known affectionately as 'Zipp' to his friends and family, was outside his grandmother's apartment on Roberts Street. He was on the phone with a friend when he encountered a neighbor, 42-year-old Lavon Bernard Julius.
What began with a simple request for a cigarette escalated into a senseless act of violence that would leave a community in mourning.
According to witness testimony, Ellison's repeated requests for a cigarette had previously annoyed Julius. On this particular night, Julius, who had been drinking, responded to the teenager's request with deadly force. The friend on the phone with Ellison reported hearing a man's voice say, 'Is you good?' immediately followed by the sound of four gunshots. Hearing the commotion, Ellison's mother rushed outside from the nearby apartment to find her son lying on the ground. Witnesses described Julius as appearing 'calm and nonchalant' in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. He initially walked away from the scene and even gave conflicting accounts to law enforcement about his whereabouts during the incident. He also hid the firearm used in the shooting behind the apartment building, though it was recovered by investigators the following day.
The investigation swiftly led to the arrest of Lavon Bernard Julius. He was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During the trial, prosecutors revealed Julius's extensive and violent criminal history, which included convictions for strong-arm robbery, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and assault with intent to kill. The prosecution argued that there was no justifiable reason for the killing, stating that it stemmed from Julius's irritation over being asked for a cigarette. After deliberating for only thirty minutes, a Lexington County jury found Lavon Bernard Julius guilty of the murder of Zeloni Canyus Ellison. On December 13, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the brutal and unnecessary death of a teenager.
