A holiday celebration took a tragic turn on the night of December 20, 2019, resulting in the death of 26-year-old Wesley James Warren-Camp. The incident unfolded at a company Christmas party held at Southern Dreams Realty on Gantt Street in Lexington, South Carolina. Officers were dispatched to the location around 11:36 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Warren-Camp in the parking lot with a single gunshot wound to his chest.
First aid was administered at the scene, but he was unresponsive and was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel.
The investigation that followed pieced together a chaotic sequence of events. Tensions had reportedly flared earlier in the evening, leading to a physical altercation between Wesley Warren-Camp and his own father, William Douglas Camp Jr. Other party guests, including 46-year-old Glenn Wilbur Rowe Jr., intervened to separate the two. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation and disperse the crowd, another attendee, Calvin Lee Brown, retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired several shots into the air. Following this, Brown left the premises.
As Rowe and his wife attempted to leave the party, they were confronted by both Wesley Warren-Camp and his father. The father and son duo pulled Rowe from his vehicle and began to physically assault him. The attack was severe, leaving Rowe with significant injuries, including a broken orbital socket, facial lacerations, and numerous contusions. Pinned on his back and being repeatedly struck, Rowe, fearing for his life and the safety of his wife, managed to grab his own handgun. He fired one shot, striking Wesley Warren-Camp in the upper body and ending the assault.
In the aftermath, the 11th Circuit Solicitor's Office reviewed the case and determined that Glenn Wilbur Rowe Jr. had acted lawfully in self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed against him for the shooting death of Warren-Camp. However, others involved faced legal consequences. William Douglas Camp Jr. was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and battery for his participation in the attack on Rowe. Calvin Lee Brown, who had fled the scene after firing his weapon, was stopped by police shortly after and was charged with driving under the influence, unlawful use of a firearm, and discharging a firearm within town limits. Both Camp and Brown later turned themselves in to the authorities.
