In the early evening of May 30, 2017, in Lexington, South Carolina, a violent encounter cut short the life of 35-year-old Derrick James Jones. Responding to a call at approximately 5:15 p.m., deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department arrived at the 100 block of South Hampton Road in the Red Bank area to find Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate medical attention and rush to a local hospital, his injuries proved fatal.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. The day after the incident, the Sheriff's Department announced they were searching for 22-year-old Jeremy Antonio Williams of Swansea. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with the murder of Derrick James Jones. Authorities cautioned the public that Williams should be considered armed and dangerous, escalating the urgency of his capture.
The manhunt for Williams came to a close in June 2017 when he made the decision to turn himself in to law enforcement. Following his surrender, Jeremy Antonio Williams was formally charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Lexington County Detention Center as the legal process against him began to unfold.
