In the summer of 1922, the life of 35-year-old Charles O. Sterner, a male Prohibition Agent, was cut tragically short in St. Louis, Missouri. On June 25th, Sterner, along with local law enforcement, was investigating the illegal production of moonshine on the grounds of the Sharpshooters Park & Club. As they conducted their search, an unknown assailant opened fire from a nearby building, striking Sterner and inflicting a serious wound.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital for medical
attention, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them seven days after the shooting. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities moved swiftly, rounding up and arresting a number of individuals in connection with the fatal shooting.
However, despite the initial arrests and a thorough investigation into the death of Agent Sterner, the individual responsible for firing the fatal shot was never definitively identified. The case ultimately remained unresolved, with no one being convicted for the murder. Charles O. Sterner was survived by his wife.
