On the afternoon of February 1, 2021, authorities in St. Louis County, Missouri, responded to a violent incident that claimed the life of 40-year-old Kevin McCanery. The African American male was in the city of Jennings, a suburb situated north of St. Louis, when the events unfolded near the 8700 block of Jennings Station Road. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene around 4:00 p.m.
following reports of gunfire in the area, specifically around an apartment complex where the shooting is believed to have originated.
Upon arrival, police officers discovered McCanery near a ZX gas station located at 8729 Jennings Station Road. Investigators determined that after sustaining at least one gunshot wound at the nearby apartment complex, he had fled toward the business in an attempt to escape or seek help. He was urgently transported to a local hospital for life-saving treatment, but medical personnel were unable to save him, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival.
During the initial response, officers also located a second victim near the apartment building where the shooting took place. A 43-year-old woman had also been struck by gunfire during the incident. She was taken to a hospital where she was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening. The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons took the lead on the investigation, processing the scene for evidence and urging witnesses to come forward. At the time of the initial reports, law enforcement had not announced any arrests or identified specific suspects in connection with the homicide.
