In May 2016, the community of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was shaken by the discovery of a body near Ranney Park. The victim was identified as 28-year-old Domorlo McCaster, a male resident of the area whose life had been abruptly ended by violence. His body was found on a Thursday, prompting an immediate investigation by the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad.
Authorities determined that McCaster had been shot in the back of the head, a fatal wound inflicted during a gathering involving alcohol and drug use.
Investigators pieced together the final moments of McCaster's life, revealing that he had been sitting in a sport utility vehicle parked in a driveway with three other men. Among them was 26-year-old Malcolm Harris, who became the primary suspect in the case. According to testimony presented later in court, the men had spent the night drinking and using drugs before the shooting occurred. While the exact motive remained unclear to witnesses and investigators, evidence pointed to Harris as the individual who discharged the weapon, killing McCaster while they sat together in the vehicle.
Law enforcement officers arrested Malcolm Harris, charging him in connection with McCaster's death. The legal proceedings culminated in a trial where a jury found Harris guilty of second-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, he was convicted of several other serious offenses, including armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and tampering with physical evidence. In December 2017, Harris appeared for sentencing, where a judge handed down a life sentence for the murder conviction. To ensure a lengthy incarceration, the court ordered an additional 41 years for the accompanying charges, with the terms set to run consecutively, effectively removing Harris from society for the remainder of his life.
