Taylor Mae Lane was a 21-year-old white female who had cultivated a deep passion for the world of purebred dogs, establishing herself as a talented and dedicated exhibitor within the community. Residing in St. Louis, Missouri, she was known for her vibrant spirit and her commitment to her animals, often traveling across the country to participate in dog shows. On the night of October 11, 2016, her life was cut short in a violent incident that shook the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood where she lived.
Taylor was at her residence on Pennsylvania Avenue near Dakota Street with her boyfriend, 32-year-old Nathan Dieckmann, a mixed martial arts fighter and father of two, when they became the victims of a home invasion.
The intruders opened fire inside the home, fatally wounding both Taylor and Nathan in what authorities classified as a double homicide. During the chaos of the attack, Taylor’s beloved Doberman Pinscher, named Audrey, attempted to protect her owner and was shot twice. Unlike her human companions, the dog survived the injuries, prompting friends and family to later rally around the animal's recovery as a surviving link to Taylor. The brutality of the crime left the local community and the tight-knit circle of dog show exhibitors in a state of shock, mourning the loss of a young woman with a promising future and a father who left behind young children.
Following the tragedy, a funeral service was held at Kutis Affton Chapel, and Taylor was laid to rest at Lakewood Park Cemetery. The community organized efforts to support the grieving families, establishing a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs and the veterinary bills for Audrey’s extensive care. Despite the immediate outpouring of support and the attention the case received, the investigation into the murders faced significant challenges. Detectives from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department pursued leads, but the identity of the perpetrators remained elusive.
Years after the incident, the case remains unsolved with no confirmed arrests or publicly identified suspects. The murders of Taylor and Nathan eventually went cold, leaving their families without the closure of a criminal conviction. Authorities have continued to seek assistance from the public, offering a reward for information that could lead to an arrest, but the individuals responsible for the deaths on that October night have yet to be brought to justice.
