On the night of December 12, 2014, tragedy struck at the Oak Park Apartments in St. Louis County, Missouri, claiming the life of 25-year-old Brittany Jefferson. The young female resident was inside her home on the 11100 block of Riaza Square when the quiet of the early morning was shattered around 12:00 a.m. Residents in the complex reported hearing a disturbance that began when an unknown assailant forcibly kicked in the door to Jefferson’s apartment. Witnesses later described hearing an argument ensue inside the unit, followed by the sound of gunfire.
Inside the apartment, Jefferson was confronted by the intruder and subsequently shot in a bedroom. The violence unfolded in the presence of her four young children, who were also in the home at the time of the break-in. Miraculously, none of the children were physically injured during the incident, though they were present when their mother was killed. Neighbors who heard the commotion later identified the children as Jefferson’s, and police officers arriving at the scene found the young survivors unharmed but in the proximity of the crime scene.
Law enforcement officers from the St. Louis County Police Department rushed to the scene after the initial emergency call, which had been reported as a burglary in progress. By the time officers were en route, the situation had escalated, and the call was updated to a shooting. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Jefferson already deceased from her injuries. Police immediately secured the area and began their investigation, searching for a male suspect whom witnesses said had kicked in the door before the shooting occurred.
In the aftermath of the killing, family members and the community were left grieving the loss of a woman described by a cousin as happy, friendly, and full of life. Police stated that they were investigating whether the incident was a targeted attack or a random burglary that turned deadly. Despite the immediate search for the man seen breaking into the apartment, reports from the time did not indicate that a suspect was immediately apprehended, and investigators continued to appeal to the public for information regarding the gunman responsible for the young mother's death.
