In a tragic turn of events on a summer evening, a family dispute in a suburban Indianapolis apartment escalated to a fatal conclusion. On August 13, 2023, 27-year-old Oliver Johnson was found deceased in an apartment located in the 7100 block of Foxborough Drive in Lawrence, a community on the outskirts of Indianapolis. The grim discovery was made by Lawrence Police Department officers who were responding to a report of a domestic altercation.
Upon their arrival at the residence, law enforcement officers found Oliver Johnson unresponsive on the kitchen floor. He had sustained significant trauma to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, it was believed a baseball bat found near him was the weapon used. However, the situation turned out to be more complex than it first appeared.
The primary suspect in the death of the young man was identified as his own father, 53-year-old Rolf Johnson. The investigation was set in motion when Rolf Johnson reportedly contacted another son, instructing him to call the police. In that communication, Rolf claimed that Oliver had attempted to strike him, and he had retaliated, possibly with a hammer.
However, the evidence at the scene told a different story. The coroner's examination revealed that Oliver Johnson had not died from blunt force trauma, but from two gunshot wounds. This finding contradicted the initial account given by his father. Inside the apartment, investigators discovered an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun near Oliver's body, along with a bullet casing and a hole in the wall, further pointing to a shooting.
Rolf Johnson was not at the apartment when the police arrived. He was located and apprehended by officers in a nearby town approximately an hour after the incident. During the traffic stop that led to his arrest, officers observed what appeared to be blood on his pants.
