On a violent summer evening in Indianapolis, 56-year-old Joseph Brownlee, a Black male, became one of the city's homicide victims. The date was July 12, 2021, and the west side of the city was experiencing a surge of violence, with Brownlee's shooting being the third in under an hour. Police were dispatched to the 5800 block of Suburban Drive around 8:14 p.m.
to investigate reports of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Brownlee inside a vehicle, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, but medical efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation into the fatal shooting.
The night was marked by a string of violent incidents across the city, stretching the resources of law enforcement and leaving multiple other individuals in critical condition from separate shootings. In the aftermath of the shooting on Suburban Drive, detectives worked to gather evidence from the scene. They sought a warrant to search the vehicle in which Brownlee was found, hoping to uncover clues that would lead to the person or persons responsible for his death.
