In the late summer of 2016, the life of 22-year-old DeAndre Phillip Tyre Johnson, a Black/African American male from Indianapolis, Indiana, was tragically cut short. On August 31, 2016, what began as an altercation inside a home escalated into fatal violence, resulting in Johnson being shot. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the deadly encounter.
The investigation into Johnson's death led detectives to identify
23-year-old Christopher Cooksey as the primary suspect. Gang detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department apprehended Cooksey in connection with the murder. Following his arrest, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Cooksey with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
