The incident occurred in the early hours of Mother's Day, when Quincy Police Department officers responded to a call about a person in imminent danger at Tanyard Creek Park. Upon arrival, they discovered a silver sedan crashed into a drainage ditch with the engine still running. Shanderika Kelly was found unresponsive in the ditch, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite attempts to administer CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Ahmeal Gainer, a 24-year-old man from Chattahoochee, Florida, who was charged with second-degree murder. Gainer and Kelly were known to each other and shared two children, although they did not live together. On the night of the incident, Gainer had been sending Kelly a series of threatening text messages after she refused to meet him and instead met with another man. Gainer tracked Kelly to Tanyard Creek Park, where he confronted her and began shooting at her vehicle. Kelly attempted to flee but lost control of her car and crashed.
