Jerrold Parker, an 18-year-old Black male, was shot and killed on February 3, 2016, in a confrontation that stemmed from a social media argument. A natural athlete who played baseball and football at Pike High School, Parker was remembered as a loving individual who was cherished by his family and friends.
The fatal
incident unfolded on the northwest side of the city, near the entrance of an apartment complex. Parker was discovered inside a parked car, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The senseless violence left his family heartbroken, with his mother expressing her profound grief over losing her son to such a trivial matter.
Investigators soon learned that the shooting was preceded by a feud on Twitter, where comments were made suggesting a group of individuals 'couldn't rap.' This online squabble escalated quickly, leading to an arranged face-to-face meeting. When the two groups confronted each other, a fight broke out, and gunshots were fired, fatally wounding Parker.
In the wake of the shooting, police identified 19-year-old Devin Leggett as the suspected shooter. Eyewitnesses at the scene identified Leggett, leading to his arrest.
