On a Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis, the life of 40-year-old Craig Esmon Jacobs, a White / Caucasian male, was abruptly ended. On September 4, 2024, police were called to the 30 block of North Gray Street, near the intersection with East Washington Street, to find Jacobs suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel who arrived at the scene, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led police to a suspect.
A report of an armed individual on the 2800 block of East Edgewood Avenue, roughly six miles south of where Jacobs was killed, was believed to be connected to the homicide. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, including their Aviation Unit and SWAT officers, responded to the location.
There, they took 53-year-old James Grossnickle into custody without incident. Grossnickle was subsequently arrested on a preliminary charge of murder in connection with the death of Craig Esmon Jacobs. The case was handled by the IMPD's Lead Detective Noe Reyes.
