On the evening of September 26, 2020, emergency services in Indianapolis responded to a car crash at the intersection of East 38th Street and North College Avenue. Upon their arrival just after 10:10 p.m., they discovered the driver, 19-year-old Tre'von Sandford, had sustained a gunshot wound. Medics quickly transported the young Black / African American male to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Preliminary investigations by the
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department led detectives to believe that Sandford had been shot prior to the vehicle collision. This finding shifted the focus of the case from a traffic accident to a homicide investigation. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, and no arrests have been made in connection with his death. The case remains an active and open investigation.
The death of Tre'von Sandford was part of a particularly violent weekend in Indianapolis, which saw several other homicides and contributed to a rising homicide rate in the city for that year.
