On March 11, 2018, a tragedy unfolded in Independence, Missouri, involving a long-time resident and retiree. Kay Francis Longwith, a 72-year-old female, was discovered deceased inside her home alongside her husband. The couple, who had spent decades working for Hallmark Cards before retiring to enjoy travel and family time, were found by a relative who had come to check on them.
The discovery prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement and emergency services, who secured the residence to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding their untimely deaths.
Detectives with the Independence Police Department examined the scene and evidence found within the home. The investigation revealed that both individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Through the collection of forensic evidence and the positioning of the bodies, authorities determined that the manner of death was a homicide-suicide. It was concluded that Kay’s husband, 81-year-old John Ellis Longwith, had fatally shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself.
