In the late evening hours of August 16, 2020, a domestic disturbance in an Independence, Missouri, home escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 44-year-old Kimah McDonald. That night, as tensions mounted between Kimah and her estranged husband, Larnell McDonald, she sent a text message to her brother, expressing fear and stating that Larnell was threatening her.
Responding to a call about the verbal dispute, police officers were approaching the residence on South Arlington Avenue when they heard a single gunshot.
Shortly after, Larnell McDonald himself called 911, requesting police presence at the home. When he exited the residence, he was detained by the officers already on the scene. He informed them that his wife was inside and that a gun had accidentally discharged. When questioned if she was alright, he simply replied, 'No.' Inside, officers discovered Kimah McDonald in a bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound to her head.
The subsequent investigation revealed a troubled relationship, with the couple reportedly in the process of separating. Larnell McDonald, then 63 years old, admitted to police that he and his wife had been arguing. He claimed that while holding his 9mm handgun, which he had purchased a couple of months prior, it 'just went off'. He expressed remorse, stating, 'I shouldn't have did it,' and explained he had pointed the gun at her in the 'heat of the moment'.
Larnell McDonald was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. In April 2021, a Jackson County jury convicted him of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, as well as armed criminal action. For these crimes, he was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison—10 years for involuntary manslaughter and a consecutive 20-year sentence for armed criminal action.
