On October 24, 2015, authorities in Independence, Missouri, began investigating the homicide of 47-year-old Michelle R. Harrelson, a White female who was found deceased at her residence on East Mechanic Avenue. The investigation commenced after her boyfriend returned home in the late afternoon and became alarmed when he could not locate her. During his search of the property, he encountered Michelle’s 23-year-old son, Shane M. Harrelson, who appeared to have blood on his shaking hands.
Following this disturbing interaction, the boyfriend discovered Michelle's body concealed in a brush pile in the yard and immediately contacted her ex-husband, who then alerted law enforcement.
When police officers arrived at the scene shortly before 6:00 p.m., they were directed to the brush pile where the victim's remains had been hidden. The subsequent investigation revealed that Michelle had suffered a brutal and violent attack involving multiple weapons. Detectives determined she had been shot, beaten with a baseball bat, and cut with a butcher knife. Evidence recovered from the scene included a bloody wooden baseball bat and a kitchen knife found in plastic bags near the body, as well as a cordless drill covered in blood, human hair, and bone fragments located inside the home. Spent 9mm shell casings were also discovered both near the body and within the residence.
Shane Harrelson was located by officers in a detached garage on the property. At the time of his apprehension, he was found using a tattoo gun to etch the word 'MOM' onto his own leg. He initially ignored police commands to drop the device but eventually complied and was taken into custody. During interviews, he reportedly displayed erratic behavior, providing incoherent responses and showing a lack of emotion when presented with photographs of the crime scene. He told investigators that he had 'kissed his mom goodbye' the previous day but refused to elaborate further.
Prosecutors charged Shane Harrelson with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with his mother's death, requesting a bond of $500,000. Family members disclosed to authorities that Shane had a history of mental illness and had previously been admitted to facilities for treatment. Neighbors described Michelle as a kind woman who often babysat local children, expressing shock at the violent nature of her death.
