On February 9, 2024, a violent disturbance erupted at a residence in the 1300 block of North Lynn Street in Independence, Missouri, leading to a tragic double homicide. Independence police officers responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting in the residential neighborhood near William Southern Elementary School. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the lifeless bodies of two women who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
One victim was found lying in the driveway of the home, while the other was located on the basement floor inside the residence. The victims were identified as 47-year-old female Jessika Koehler and her sister, Janessa Russell.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to surveillance footage from the home, which provided a harrowing account of the events leading up to the deaths. The video captured a silver vehicle arriving at the property and a man, later identified as 48-year-old Namphonh Suady, exiting the car armed with a pistol. The footage showed the assailant running into the driveway and firing the weapon toward the house. The exchange of gunfire appeared to be mutual, as shots were also fired from within the residence. Suady was seen fleeing the scene on foot, leaving behind a trail of blood that indicated he had been injured during the confrontation.
A K-9 unit tracked the blood trail to a location near Noland Road and East Elizabeth Street, where officers apprehended Suady. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his left arm and was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. Police recovered a 9mm handgun and a pool of blood near an air conditioning unit behind a nearby residence, linking the weapon to the suspect. Suady, who had a prior criminal history including domestic assault, was identified by family members as the ex-boyfriend of Koehler. Following his arrest, prosecutors in Jackson County charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm, citing his status as a convicted felon. At the time of the initial reports, authorities noted that the investigation remained active and that additional charges could be forthcoming.
