On a Friday in November 2023, 19-year-old Karla Brown went to the Independence Center mall with friends, excited to shop for clothes for her unborn baby boy, who she planned to name Max. Brown was four months pregnant and looking forward to becoming a mother. While at the mall, an argument broke out between two groups of people in a breezeway.
