On a Friday in November 2023, 19-year-old Karla Brown went to the Independence Center mall with friends, excited to shop for clothes for her unborn baby boy, who she planned to name Max. Brown was four months pregnant and looking forward to becoming a mother. While at the mall, an argument broke out between two groups of people in a breezeway. The confrontation quickly escalated to gunfire, and in the chaos that ensued, Brown was shot in the head.
Three other people were also injured in the shooting.
Following the shooting, Karla Brown was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. Tragically, her injuries were too severe, and she died about a week later. Her unborn son, Max, also did not survive. In a final act of generosity, her organs were donated. Friends remembered her as a fun, sweet, and quiet person who loved to shop and spend time with them.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 21-year-old MarkAnthony Greer. He was initially charged with three counts of unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action. One of these charges was later upgraded to second-degree murder. Greer maintained that although he was at the mall during the incident, he was not armed. Investigators had difficulty in the case because the guns used in the shooting were never recovered, forcing them to rely on evidence such as shell casings and blood spatter.
In August 2024, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced that all charges against MarkAnthony Greer were being dropped. Prosecutors stated that after a review of the evidence gathered since the initial filing, they could not prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite the charges being dropped, the investigation into Karla Brown's death remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that a different set of charges could be filed in the future. Another man, 19-year-old Leandre Peterson Jr., is still facing a charge of tampering with physical evidence in connection with the shooting. Karla Brown's family has also filed a lawsuit against the mall and its security company, alleging they were negligent in providing a safe environment.
