On February 7, 2025, a violent incident occurred at the Hawthorne Place apartment complex in Independence, Missouri, claiming the life of 21-year-old Black female Shayla Key. Independence police officers were dispatched to the residence located on East 5th Street North, situated near Highway 291, at approximately 2:45 a.m. following urgent reports of gunfire in the area.
