Isaiah Caldwell, a 24-year-old man, was fatally shot on April 27, 2025, during an on-campus incident at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Caldwell was visiting the university at the time and was not an ECSU student. The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m., shortly after students had gathered for the annual Viking Fest Yard Fest in the quad area.
The event, meant to be a celebration, turned tragic when gunfire erupted, leaving Caldwell dead and several others injured.
Authorities reported that three ECSU students sustained gunshot wounds, while two additional individuals were hurt in the ensuing chaos. The injured were transported to the hospital, where their conditions were deemed non-life-threatening. The university, along with local and state law enforcement agencies—including ECSU Police, Elizabeth City Police, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation—launched an investigation into the shooting.
Despite ongoing inquiries, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with Caldwell’s death. Investigators have identified persons of interest, but they are not believed to be students at ECSU. The university has since increased security measures, restricting access to certain areas of campus and offering counseling services to students affected by the tragedy. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
