In what was described as a domestic dispute, 28-year-old Jessica Marie Bassfield was fatally shot on a Monday afternoon in Bulloch County, Georgia. The incident occurred on February 15, 2016, at a residence in the 500 block of Highway 301 South, just a few miles from the Evans County line. When sheriff's deputies, EMS, and Georgia State Patrol troopers arrived at the scene around 12:45 p.m., they discovered Jessica Bassfield's body inside a small outbuilding, used as a playhouse, on the property. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Present at the scene when first responders arrived was Jessica's husband, 30-year-old Bryan Eugene Bassfield. He was interviewed by investigators while others processed the scene of the shooting. According to Jessica's adoptive father, who lived nearby and was changing the oil in his vehicle at the time, Bryan Bassfield came running out of the playhouse screaming, 'I didn't mean it!'. The couple, who lived in a camper on the property, had reportedly been experiencing marital troubles and had discussed divorce.
Following the initial investigation, Bryan Eugene Bassfield was taken into custody and subsequently arrested and charged in connection with his wife's death. The charges brought against him included one count of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was held in the Bulloch County Jail without bail. Later reports confirmed that Bryan Bassfield was convicted of killing his wife and is incarcerated in middle Georgia. Jessica Bassfield, a devoted mother, left behind her young daughter.
