In the quiet community of Statesboro, Georgia, the life of 29-year-old Sharell Mercer came to a tragic end on the evening of Friday, March 10, 2017. A native of Bulloch County, Mercer was a 2006 graduate of Statesboro High School and an employee at a local Dollar General store. She was a mother to five children.
On that fateful night, law enforcement responded to a call at the Eagle Gate Apartments on South Mulberry Street. Inside one of the units, they discovered a scene of sorrow.
According to the Bulloch County Coroner, Sharell Mercer and a man named Joaquin Brown had been involved in an argument. The dispute escalated to a devastating conclusion when Brown turned a revolver on himself, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound to his head. In the immediate aftermath of this shocking event, Mercer then used the same weapon to take her own life.
Sharell Mercer was pronounced dead at the scene, while Joaquin Brown was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The Statesboro Police Department, after conducting interviews with family members and examining the physical evidence, issued a press release confirming that the incident was being investigated as a double suicide. The case, as is standard procedure, remained under investigation to ensure all details were thoroughly reviewed. However, due to the nature of the findings, there were no suspects sought by law enforcement, and no arrests were made in connection with the deaths.
