In the late hours of June 14, 2020, a tragedy unfolded on the Veterans Memorial Parkway in Statesboro, Georgia, that would claim the life of 17-year-old Haley Leigh Hutcheson, a White/Caucasian female. Hutcheson, a student at Claxton High School, was a passenger in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with four other teenagers when a fateful encounter with another vehicle ended in gunfire. A single bullet pierced the rear window of the truck, striking Hutcheson in the head. Her friends rushed her to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, but her injuries were fatal, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into Hutcheson's death quickly focused on identifying the occupants of the other vehicle. Within days, thanks to investigative work and tips from the community, authorities identified William Marcus "Marc" Wilson, a 21-year-old from Sharpsburg, as the suspect. On June 16, 2020, Wilson turned himself in to the Statesboro Police Department, accompanied by his attorney. He was subsequently arrested and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Hutcheson's death.
The case against Wilson proceeded to trial, where a complex and emotional narrative emerged. Wilson's defense team did not dispute that he fired the fatal shot but argued that his actions were in self-defense. They claimed that the occupants of the pickup truck, in which Hutcheson was a passenger, were driving aggressively, attempting to run Wilson's car off the road, and shouting racial slurs at him and his girlfriend. Wilson, who is biracial, contended that he fired his legally owned handgun as a warning shot to de-escalate a dangerous and racially charged situation. The prosecution, however, argued that Wilson had no justification for using deadly force and could have driven away from the alleged harassment.
After a weeklong trial in August 2022, the jury deliberated for approximately seven hours. They ultimately acquitted Wilson of the more serious charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. However, they found him guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. On September 20, 2022, a judge sentenced Wilson to the maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for the conviction. He was given credit for the time he had already served in jail while awaiting trial.
