Upon arrival, first responders entered the home and discovered Johnson, a Black male, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
The scene was immediately secured as detectives began collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the violence.
Shortly after the incident, law enforcement officials announced that a suspect had been identified and taken into custody. The investigation revealed that all individuals involved in the altercation were accounted for, and police stated there was no further danger to the community at large. However, the suspect was released from custody soon after the arrest without charges being filed. Family members of the victim later expressed frustration to the media, noting that investigators had informed them the suspect claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense. Eugene Johnson, affectionately known as 'Geno' by his friends and family, was a long-time resident of the area and a graduate of Parkview High School. He was remembered by his loved ones for his love of basketball, break dancing, and his dedication to his children. At the time of his death, Johnson was facing pending legal proceedings related to drug charges, for which he was scheduled to stand trial later that year, though records indicated he had no history of violent crime. His death occurred just days before Christmas, leaving his family, including his mother and children, to mourn his loss during the holiday season.
