On the night of October 28, 2023, tragedy struck in the 2400 block of South Sheridan Boulevard in Springfield, Missouri. Around 9:59 p.m., the Springfield Police Department received reports of gunfire following a disturbance in the street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 33-year-old male Jacob “Jake” Gatten lying on the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
Gatten was a father to a young son named Abel and worked in construction, having started his own company after years of learning the trade alongside his father.
Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from an argument that erupted in the street, escalating until multiple shots were fired. In the immediate aftermath, police identified and took into custody two individuals: 19-year-old Tanine Punyamra and a 17-year-old juvenile male. While Punyamra was initially detained as a person of interest, authorities later released him, and no charges were filed against him in connection with the homicide.
The investigation subsequently focused on the 17-year-old suspect, whose identity was withheld from the public due to his age. Prosecutors charged the teenager with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon for his alleged role in Gatten's death. The case was referred to the Greene County Juvenile Office to determine further legal proceedings, while detectives continued to ask the public for any additional information regarding the incident.
