In the late summer of 2020, the life of 39-year-old Shad Lee Allen Brown was brought to an abrupt and violent end in his Springfield, Missouri, home. On September 1st of that year, neighbors were startled by the sound of gunshots. Moments later, a man was seen fleeing from Brown's residence on North Robberson Avenue and hastily driving away in a U-Haul truck that had been parked outside.
Law enforcement was called to the scene to investigate what was initially described as a suspicious
death. It soon became clear that Brown had been the victim of a homicide. An investigation was launched, and detectives began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Surveillance footage from the area proved to be a crucial piece of evidence. The footage showed Brown earlier in the day, seemingly helping the man who would later become his killer, move items into the very same U-Haul truck.
Within two days, the investigation pointed to 24-year-old Nicholas J. Barnes of Lebanon. He was apprehended by police at a law office in Springfield. The motive behind the killing was determined to be a personal conflict. Barnes was reportedly enraged that his ex-girlfriend was in a relationship with Brown.
Barnes was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Shad Brown's death. After his arrest, he was jailed without bond. Ultimately, Nicholas Barnes pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. On July 15, 2022, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the killing of Shad Brown.
