In the late hours of March 15, 2020, Troy Rapp, a 57-year-old male employee at a Kum & Go convenience store in Springfield, Missouri, found himself in the midst of a sudden and violent tragedy. An ordinary night at the gas station on East Chestnut Expressway descended into chaos when a gunman, later identified as 31-year-old Joaquin S. Roman, crashed his vehicle into the storefront and entered the building, opening fire on those inside.
Rapp, along with a customer and another contractor, became the unfortunate victims of a senseless act of violence that would also claim the life of a police officer.
The evening's horror began with reports of an active shooter firing randomly from his car as he drove through the city. This 'roving active shooter' created a string of crime scenes before his destructive path culminated at the Kum & Go. Inside the store, Roman was armed with a rifle and a pistol, both of which were acquired legally. An employee who survived the attack recounted that the shooter delivered a speech about being disrespected throughout his life and his desire to inflict pain on others.
The first police officers to arrive on the scene were met with gunfire from inside the store. Officer Christopher Walsh was fatally shot as he attempted to rescue a victim, and another officer, Josiah Overton, sustained injuries. Ultimately, the rampage ended with Roman taking his own life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators worked to piece together a motive for Roman's actions. It was revealed that he had moved to Missouri from California in 2019 and had concerns about his mental health, having searched online for 'mental illness' and 'tactical shooting'. A later report by the U.S. Secret Service described Roman as holding 'neo-Nazi and anti-government beliefs' which he had expressed on social media. The investigation into his electronic devices and belongings sought to provide a clearer understanding of what led to the tragic events of that night, though a definitive motive remained elusive to authorities in the immediate wake of the incident. The shooter acted alone, and with his death, the immediate threat was neutralized, leaving a community to mourn the loss of four innocent lives, including that of Troy Rapp.
