On the morning of February 1, 2018, tragedy struck at a mobile home park in Springfield, Missouri, claiming the life of 38-year-old Kenneth R. Clark. While visiting the residence of his girlfriend, Stacey Herman, Clark became the target of a violent home invasion. According to reports from the scene, three masked men wearing bandanas forced their way into the dwelling.
The intruders confronted Clark, with one stating, 'You're going to pay for what you did earlier today,' before shooting him in the chest. Following the attack, the assailants seized a wooden box from the floor and fled the premises. Clark succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's second homicide of the year.
Law enforcement officers with the Springfield Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the shooting. Interviews with Herman and physical evidence recovered from the scene, including a shotgun, drug paraphernalia, and DNA swabs, led detectives to identify three suspects: Shane Stamm, Dustin Stacey, and Jerry Earls Jr. Investigators determined that the motive for the killing was likely retaliatory, stemming from a dispute over drug debts or conflicting drug distribution networks. The men had reportedly gone to the home specifically to confront Clark regarding this conflict.
The legal proceedings resulted in significant prison sentences for the individuals involved. In March 2019, a Greene County jury found Shane Stamm guilty of second-degree murder, and he was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role as the shooter. Dustin Stacey pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 20-year sentence. The case against the third suspect, Jerry Earls Jr., faced delays due to questions regarding his mental competency to stand trial.
