In the summer of 2023, the life of 19-year-old Keontae Tureaud was cut short in Springfield, Missouri. The young man, an employee at Walmart and a graduate of Parkview High School, was at a residence on West Madison Street on the evening of July 1st when he sustained a gunshot wound. Emergency services were called to the scene at 10:45 p.m., and Tureaud was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
He succumbed to his injuries two days later, on July 3, 2023.
Present at the scene of the shooting was 20-year-old Nikolai Janes, who was identified as the suspect. According to reports, Tureaud and Janes were friends and were playing with a handgun when the incident occurred. Authorities stated that Janes pointed the firearm at the back of Tureaud's head and pulled the trigger, believing the weapon was unloaded. Janes was arrested on July 2nd and subsequently booked into the Greene County Jail.
The Greene County Prosecutor's Office initially charged Nikolai Janes with second-degree assault and armed criminal action, and he was held on a $100,000 bond. Following Tureaud's death, which was classified as the city's 10th homicide of the year, it was indicated that the charges against Janes could be amended. The prosecutor's office has cautioned that the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with further information to come forward. In the wake of his death, Tureaud was remembered by his family as a selfless and thoughtful young man who was a registered organ donor.
