Robert Moffett, a 32-year-old male, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 6, 2021, in Springfield, Missouri. The incident occurred just after midnight in a parking lot situated at the southwest corner of the intersection of Patton Avenue and Walnut Street. Officers from the Springfield Police Department were in the vicinity when they heard the sound of gunfire. Responding to the scene, they discovered Moffett suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide was undertaken by the Springfield Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit. For several months, detectives worked to identify a person of interest. Their efforts eventually led them to a suspect who was not a local resident. On July 21, 2021, authorities located and arrested 45-year-old Thomas Haynes of Florida in connection with the shooting. The following day, on July 22, 2021, the Greene County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Haynes with second-degree murder for his alleged role in Robert Moffett's death.
Following his arrest and charging, Thomas Haynes was held in custody as the legal proceedings against him commenced. The case against him moved through the Greene County court system, culminating in a resolution that brought a measure of closure to the violent death of Robert Moffett. Ultimately, Haynes entered a guilty plea to the amended charge of voluntary manslaughter. In accordance with the plea agreement, he was sentenced to serve 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
