In the early morning hours of September 19, 2009, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet outside the Augusta Plaza strip mall on the northwest side of Indianapolis. When the echoes of the shots faded, 29-year-old D'Angelo Antwon Toney Sr., a Black male, lay dying in the parking lot. Two other men, aged 36 and 25, were also struck by bullets and were rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
