On the evening of January 3, 2023, a violent incident unfolded in the parking lot of the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, Indiana, resulting in the death of a local teenager. Michael Mason Jr., a 16-year-old African American male, was fatally shot near the south entrance of the shopping center, in the vicinity of the Forever 21 and H&M stores. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 7:30 p.m., where they discovered the wounded youth. Despite being transported to a hospital for emergency treatment, he succumbed to his injuries. A second individual, an adult man identified in later reports as Justin Johnson Sparks, was also struck by gunfire during the same event but survived his wounds.

The investigation into the shooting suggested that the confrontation likely stemmed from a case of mistaken identity regarding a vehicle. Detectives learned that Mason and the other victim had exited the mall and approached a white Chevrolet Impala, believing it to be their own car. However, the vehicle they attempted to enter was occupied by 19-year-old Clyde Johnson, who was sitting in the back seat. According to accounts provided to law enforcement, when the pair tried to access the car, the occupant opened fire. The surviving victim reported that he attempted to run away after the initial shots were fired, but the shooter allegedly exited the vehicle, chased him, and continued shooting, striking him in the leg.

In March 2023, more than two months after the fatal encounter, authorities moved forward with charges against the suspect. A special prosecutor assigned to the case filed charges against Clyde Johnson, including voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, and battery by means of a deadly weapon. Johnson reportedly told investigators that he believed he was about to be robbed when the two individuals approached his vehicle, claiming he fired his weapon in self-defense. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, homicide detectives located and apprehended Johnson in Indianapolis, taking him into custody to face legal proceedings for the death of Mason and the injuries sustained by the second man.
