In a home on East 23rd Street and Guilford Avenue in Indianapolis, a domestic argument on August 24, 2019, escalated into a tragedy that would claim two lives and leave another person critically wounded. William 'Cornbread' Wilson Jr., a 37-year-old Black male, was at the center of the dispute with his girlfriend, Ivory Smith. The heated exchange took a fatal turn when Smith reportedly grabbed a gun and opened fire on Wilson.
The violence did not end with the initial shots.
As Wilson attempted to flee, Smith pursued him, firing more rounds. In the chaos, bullets struck not only their intended target but also Wilson's 3-month-old nephew, Kahdor Wilson, and his mother. When police responded to the scene, they discovered a horrifying tableau. Both William Wilson Jr. and the infant, Kahdor, were pronounced dead at the scene. Wilson's mother was found with critical gunshot wounds and was rushed to the intensive care unit.
The investigation into the deadly shooting quickly identified Ivory Smith, then 36 years old, as the perpetrator. She was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder for her role in the devastating incident. During police questioning, Smith confessed to her actions. She admitted to shooting William multiple times following their argument and acknowledged that in her pursuit of him, she had unintentionally shot his mother and the baby, stating that she had not been aware of the infant's presence in the room at the time she fired the additional shots. The case against her proceeded through the legal system, leaving a family and community to mourn the senseless loss of two lives.
