In the late hours of a summer evening in Indianapolis, a sequence of events unfolded that would end in tragedy. On August 1, 2021, 26-year-old Adam Deavers, a White male, was discovered in a vehicle that had veered off the road and collided with a tree in the 4100 block of East 35th Street. Alongside him was 25-year-old Hayley Merrill; both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were initially dispatched to the scene following reports of
shots fired and a subsequent car crash. Upon their arrival just after 9 p.m., they found the two victims inside the vehicle. Medics were called to the scene but pronounced both Deavers and Merrill deceased. Investigators believe the incident occurred while their vehicle was traveling eastbound on East 35th Street, suggesting the shooting happened before the car crashed. The prevailing theory is that a robbery attempt escalated into a double homicide.
A significant breakthrough in the case came from an unrelated incident. A handgun recovered after a separate police action shooting in September 2021 was linked to the murders of Deavers and Merrill through ballistic testing. The gun had been used by James Williams, a 33-year-old homicide suspect, who fired at detectives before he was fatally shot by police. This same weapon was also connected to another homicide and a non-fatal shooting from the previous year. The investigation into the deaths of Adam Deavers and Hayley Merrill is now considered 'exceptionally cleared.'
