On the night of Wednesday, October 23, 2019, law enforcement officials in Raytown, Missouri, were summoned to a residence following reports of gunfire. Just before 10:40 p.m., police officers arrived at a home located in the 5600 block of Crescent Avenue, a neighborhood in the suburban city bordering Kansas City. Inside the residence, responders discovered two adult males who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Both victims were suffering from injuries described by authorities as life-threatening and were immediately transported to a local area hospital for emergency treatment.
One of the victims was identified as 28-year-old Phillip James, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri. Despite the medical intervention, James succumbed to his injuries the following day, Thursday, October 24, 2019. The second victim, whose identity was not released to the public at the time, remained in the hospital in stable condition. James was remembered by his family as a dedicated father and entrepreneur who had recently started his own lawn care business and was known for his culinary skills.
In the immediate aftermath of the violence, the Raytown Police Department initiated a homicide investigation, marking the city's ninth reported homicide of that year.
