In a senseless act of violence on a Sunday afternoon, 18-year-old Dakota Rogers lost his life in a drive-by shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 16, 2022. Rogers, a passenger in a Toyota Corolla, was pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of Vivion Road and North Oak Trafficway. The driver of the car, an 18-year-old friend of Rogers, was critically injured and paralyzed after being shot multiple times.
The tragic events unfolded after Rogers and his friend had a
chance encounter with two men at a red light. Words were exchanged, with the occupants of the other vehicle reportedly claiming the area as 'our streets' and telling the teens to 'stop trying to be hard.' As Rogers and his friend drove away, their car was riddled with bullets from an assault rifle. The driver, despite being severely wounded and losing feeling in his legs, tried to steer the car to safety but ultimately crashed into other vehicles.
An investigation led by the Kansas City Police Department quickly identified two suspects, 20-year-old twin brothers from suburban Shawnee, Isaiah Z. Hernandez and Isaac G. Hernandez. They were arrested and charged in Clay County Circuit Court with second-degree murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. Surveillance footage from the area and witness statements were crucial in identifying the Volkswagen the suspects were allegedly driving. The brothers were taken into custody in Johnson County and prosecutors requested they be held on a $1 million bond.
