In the early hours of Sunday, June 25, 2023, gunshots shattered the night in the 3600 block of Michigan Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Responding to reports of the shooting at approximately 2 a.m., police officers discovered 17-year-old Ricky Monroe inside a vehicle, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
The young man, who had just turned 17 that April and recently graduated from high school, was planning to attend the University of Missouri — Kansas City after being selected for a scholarship.
Investigators believe Monroe was attending a party at a residence in front of which he was found. They are confident that multiple people witnessed the shooting but have yet to identify any suspects or make any arrests in the case. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unknown. The family of Ricky Monroe has pleaded for witnesses to come forward with any information that could lead to justice for their son, emphasizing that he was a family-oriented and joyful young man.
In an effort to generate new leads, Monroe's unsolved homicide was featured in the 'Open For Justice' video series, a project by the AdHoc Group Against Crime in partnership with the Kansas City Police Department. The initiative aims to bring attention to cold cases by sharing the stories of the victims. Despite these efforts, as of late 2024, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with Ricky Monroe's death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
