In a quiet southeast Atlanta townhome community, a dispute over money tragically escalated, claiming the life of 23-year-old Joseph Bates, a male, on December 10, 2018. The incident unfolded in the middle of the day, around 12:30 p.m., at a residence on Tufton Trail. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Bates suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an acquaintance of Bates, 60-year-old Tony Stiles. According to witnesses, the two men were involved in a disagreement that turned violent. After the fatal shot was fired, Stiles was seen fleeing the location in a vehicle before authorities could arrive. The nature of their dispute was believed to be financial.
Based on the evidence gathered at the scene and witness statements, homicide investigators were able to secure warrants for the arrest of Tony Stiles. The charges against him included felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently located and taken into custody by fugitive units.
