In the fall of 2020, the life of 17-year-old Jonah Poole, a Black male from Smyrna, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On November 5, 2020, Poole was fatally shot in the chest at the Wellington Point apartments on Maner Terrace in the Smyrna area. He was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but ultimately did not survive his injuries.
The day after the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Poole's death.
Josiah Maurice Oubre, also 17 at the time, was taken into custody at his home in East Point. According to the arrest warrant, Oubre had gone to the apartment complex with the intention of smoking with Poole, whom he was there to meet. However, the encounter turned violent, leading to the fatal shooting.
Oubre was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault for his alleged role in the incident. He was booked into the Cobb County jail and was being held without bond. While an arrest was made, law enforcement officials did not publicly release a detailed motive for the shooting, stating that it remained an active homicide investigation.
In the wake of his death, friends and family gathered to remember Jonah Poole. A celebration of his life was held on November 14, 2020, at the F.L. Sims Funeral Home in Smyrna, providing a space for the community to mourn the loss of the young man to gun violence.
