On February 10, 2017, a young African American man named Dallas Spruill, who was 22 years old, was found deceased in the back seat of a car at the Sierra Ridge Apartments on Delmar Lane in Atlanta, Georgia. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The discovery launched an extensive investigation by the Atlanta Police Department into the circumstances surrounding his death, which was one of several shootings in the area that week.
The investigation revealed that Spruill, along with two
other individuals, was in the process of selling televisions around Atlanta. Their sales activities led them to the apartment complex where they encountered a man named Denarius Harris. An altercation broke out between them, which ultimately led to Harris fatally shooting Spruill. For nearly seven months, the case remained a primary focus for detectives who faced challenges in gathering information from witnesses.
A break in the case came in August 2017, when Atlanta police arrested Denarius Harris in connection with Spruill's murder. Harris was subsequently indicted by a Fulton County grand jury on a number of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. During his trial, Harris claimed he acted in self-defense, a claim that was contested by differing witness accounts of the confrontation.
The jury ultimately rejected Harris's self-defense argument, finding him guilty of felony murder predicated on aggravated assault and the firearm charge, though he was acquitted of other charges. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder with an additional five years for the firearm charge. Harris later appealed his conviction, arguing that the jury instructions regarding self-defense were erroneous. However, the Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the trial court's decision, and his conviction and sentence were affirmed.
