On a November morning in 2022, a simple act of kindness tragically cut short the life of Reginald McDonald, a 44-year-old man from the Atlanta area. He had gone to the Columbia Mill Apartments on Flat Shoals Road in DeKalb County to help a young woman he considered a stepdaughter change a flat tire. His wife, Arista Pittman, would later describe him as a loving and devoted husband and father who would do anything for anybody.
The couple shared a 2-year-old son, and McDonald's sudden death left his family heartbroken.
While McDonald was helping his stepdaughter, her ex-girlfriend, Zarmayah Tyson, arrived at the apartment complex. An argument reportedly broke out between Tyson and McDonald. Despite the confrontation, McDonald returned to the task of changing the tire. It was then that Tyson allegedly produced a handgun and fatally shot him. His wife later lamented that he had nothing to do with the dispute between the two women and was simply trying to lend a helping hand.
Following the shooting on November 9th, Zarmayah Tyson fled the scene, sparking a search by the DeKalb County Police. For more than a week, she remained at large. The investigation led authorities to Texas, where she was located and arrested on November 23rd in connection with McDonald's murder. The arrest brought a measure of relief to McDonald's grieving family, who had been pleading for justice in the wake of his senseless killing.
